I read two chapters in this book and immediately was captivated. I'm not one to enjoy love stories so I understand the negativity others are posing towards the love portion of the story but the writing is absolutely beautiful. Each phrase is worded so delicately that you nearly feel their love even if you hate romance novels. Recommend for literature guru's

I read this book in my late teens when I was in the stage of reading lots of romantic books! I still remember the names of the characters in the book over 35 years later! My sister and mom also read it and we had deep discussions about the book and its theme! The heroine is not perfect! Not a blonde with blue eyes but a red head with unmanageable curly hair and freckles and barren! Miraculously, the story doesn't end with a surprise pregnancy but with a complete content and still very much in lo..more

I read the last two chapters for an English course, just as Michael did. Faye flounders around, Kai is the only thing keeping her standing (because he is a strong man and she is an emotional woman). It's stupid.
I also disliked the commentary on sterile women. So, in Faye's world, a woman who can't bear children is just a waste of time? Nice.

I always wanted to write, ever since I was a child growing up in Holland. I was a dreamer, reading books and making up my own stories. I had notebooks full of stories which I illustrated with crayon drawings. My brothers burned the notebooks in the attic one day, fortunately not burning down the house. They don’t remember this now, but I do!

'Faye, we're in this together-you and I. Don't you see that? It's not just your problem, it's ours.' Faye was afraid to come out with her secret of not being able to conceive children, mainly because she thought that that would affect her relationship with Kai. 'If I told you..you wouldn't want me anymore!' Kai understood what Faye was going through. He knew how much it meant to her to have children. He also knew that he had to stay by her side during her grief. But Faye felt like she was letting him down. 'Kai, I..I can't live all my life with your regret and your disappointment. Every time we see some pregnant woman, every time we're with somebody else's children I'll feel I've failed you! I..' At this point, Kai showed his sympathy for her. It did not matter to him that his children would not come directly from inside of her. All he cared about was being happy with Faye and being able to spend the rest of his life with her. However, Faye could not understand why he wanted to be with her and not any other woman who could give life to his children. 'You have a choice, don't you see that? You don't have to marry me. You could marry someone else and have children of your own.' With Faye saying that, Kai still chose to be with Faye because she is the only woman he has ever loved since the first day they met. He could not compare any other woman to Faye, mainly because Faye was
